How to Go from Awkward to Automatic When Learning a New Behavior

As you’re trying to learn how to perform a new behavior or skill, it’s going to feel awkward and uncomfortable at first. In this video, you’ll discover why that is and what’s required to develop a habit so it becomes automatic.

If you found this video valuable, check out “The Crunch Point – The One Thing You Must Do to Change Your Behavior” by my business partner, Denny Coates. The process he describes for breaking a bad habit also applies to creating a new one.

“Habit is a cable; we weave a thread of it each day, and at last we cannot break it." - Horace Mann

“Every day you miss playing or practicing is one day longer it takes to be good." - Ben Hogan

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit." – Aristotle

“Let him that would move the world first move himself.” – Socrates

  1. Thanks for this post. I really do believe that if you understand what's going on when you're trying to adopt a new behavior pattern, it makes it easier to persist when you get frustrated.

  2. Speaking of "first steps," Meredith, 2 weeks ago I went to my first "Body Steps" class at Gold's gym. I felt like a fool because I couldn't keep up - and the 2nd class I attended was even worse! Well, I decided to give it a few more tries before giving up. I just finished my 4th class today, and it was much easier! There's hope! Now I plan to keep going, and I think I can actually get good at Step! Hey, there are about 40 women in that class, and they are doing it, so I'm sure I can, too!

    Thanks for the post!

  3. Denny, yes, when you recognize that feeling uncomfortable is part of the learning process, you're more likely to stick with it.

Camille, perfect example! And you bring up another good point about the learning process. When you see others who have done it successfully, you strengthen your own belief in your ability to do it, too. Thanks for sharing an experience we can all relate to!
